CITY OF COUNCIL BLUFFS: Council Bluffs Fire Department Water Rescue Incident

Announcement

City of Council Bluffs issued the following announcement on Oct. 23.

The Council Bluffs Fire Department was dispatched to Lake Manawa for a possible water rescue on Sunday, October 20, 2019, at 12:02 p.m. Weather conditions included clear skies, changing to overcast, a temperature of 59 degrees Fahrenheit, relative humidity of 82%, and winds out of the southeast at 22 mph, gusting to 36 mph. Dispatch reports indicated that a sailboat had capsized on the west side of the lake, and the callers were no longer able to see the two occupants. Rescue 51, Engine 41, and Medic 3 responded to the west boat ramp, near Pelican Cove. The on-duty Assistant Chief responded to the Lake Manawa Sailing Association to meet with the 911 callers and club members.

The capsized sailboat was located on the west wing of the lake, just west of the duck hunting point. The sailboat was on its side and floating westward. Two people wearing life jackets could be seen in the water, clinging to the boat. Rescue 51 launched from the west boat ramp and proceeded through the tube access to the lake. At 12:18 p.m., fire department personnel rescued two adult victims and took them to the boat ramp for evaluation by Medic 3. Both victims, male and female, were wearing cold water gear and denied treatment.

Rescue 51 returned to the lake to secure the sailboat. To ensure rocks and wind did not destroy the boat, crews worked with the boat owner to remove the sails from the sailboat. After which, Rescue 51 successfully towed the sailboat to the beach at the Lake Manawa Sailing Association, where club members, including the male victim, secured the vessel.

Thanks to the CBFD for their relentless training and extreme preparedness.
