City of Council Bluffs issued the following announcement on Jan. 16.
The CB Indoor Triathlon is presented by Council Bluffs Parks & Recreation in partnership with the YMCA and will take place on Sunday, February 16, from 8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Charles E. Lakin YMCA.
Unlike a traditional triathlon which covers fixed distances of swimming, cycling, and running, indoor triathlons challenge competitors to achieve the greatest distance in a fixed time frame. Participants begin the triathlon with a 10-minute swim, next is a 20-minute cycle on a stationary bike, followed by a 15-minute run on a treadmill.
The Council Bluffs Parks and Recreation department identified a need for a recreation opportunity during the winter months, and the Charles E. Lakin YMCA graciously opened their doors to this event. “This event, and opportunity for the community, is a result of our strong partnership with the YMCA,” said Vincent Martorello, Director of City of Council Bluffs Parks and Recreation.
“It is great to partner with the City of Council Bluffs Parks and Recreation department to bring additional fitness and fun to our community,” said Leo McIntosh, Executive Director of the Lakin YMCA. “Finding ways to help people realize that healthy living is attainable for everyone is important to the Y. We are excited for another great partnership in Council Bluffs.”
The Triathlon is quickly becoming a popular sport in Iowa. The 2020 IRONMAN® 70.3® North American Championship triathlon will be held in Des Moines in June. The CB Indoor Triathlon allows people to “try a tri” in a less intimidating way, or use it as a step in the training process.
“Whether someone is a serious competitor or a beginner, this event is a great way to challenge oneself by putting on a spin on a regular fitness routine,” said Kelsey Bockman, Recreation and Events Coordinator for City of Council Bluffs Parks and Recreation.
The CB Indoor Triathlon is for adults 18 years and older, and space is limited. Those interested can register online at CB Indoor Triathlon Registration. Registration closes on February 11, 2020.
Volunteer opportunities are available at the CB Indoor Triathlon, and positions include athlete check-in and time and distance keepers.
