The Southwest Iowa COVID-19 Response Fund dispersed money to its first set of recipients: organizations devoted to helping the less fortunate.

More than $168,000 was allocated to New Visions Homeless Shelter, Food Bank of the Heartland, Food Bank of Iowa, Care and Share Pantry, Centro Latino and Citylight Church, according to The Daily Nonpareil.

Pete Tulipana, the president and CEO of Iowa West Foundation, said the groups have a main focus of getting shelter and food for the most vulnerable in southwest Iowa.

New Visions Homeless Services will use the $55,000 it received to assist the at-risk homeless population. The group’s leader, Bob Sheehan, is grateful for the funds.

“We are grateful for all they and the other funders have done as we now are better ready to help homeless men with the COVID-19 pandemic,” Sheehan told the Nonpareil.

The Iowa West Foundation will defer its current grant cycle because of the novel coronavirus outbreak’s effects on many area nonprofits. Those with deferred applications will get another chance to apply.

The Southwest Iowa COVID-19 Response Fund is still accepting applications and donations.

Donna Dostal, president and CEO of the Pottawattamie County Community Foundation, told the Nonpareil the COVID-19 Response Fund brings the entire community together to make a lasting positive impact.

The fund’s four major priorities are emergency assistance, public health infrastructure, continuity of nonprofit operations and funding to support long-term recovery relief.

The money would help those who lack proper shelter and meals, support innovative actions taken in response to the outbreak, sustain local organizations and aid in any recovery relief.

Fund applications can be accessed at iowawestfoundation.org and ourpccf.org. Those who would like to make a donation can visit www.ourpccf.org or call 712-256-7007.

Dostal told the Nonpareil that the Pottawattamie County Community Foundation will match individuals 10%.
