As the coronavirus continues to impact Iowa, United Way of the Midlands receives a $225,500 grant from the Iowa West Foundation to be put toward the Community Care Fund.

In the Council Bluffs-Omaha area, there are over 100,000 people living below poverty, according to the Daily Nonpareil. In addition to those in poverty, 300,000 more people are one misfortune away from being in poverty.

United Way's Community Care Fund helps supply money to local nonprofit programs that help these people, according to the Daily Nonpareil. The nonprofits give basic needs, education and financial stability to those struggling in the Midlands, according to the Daily Nonpareil.

“We are honored to receive support from the Iowa West Foundation,” Shawna Forsberg, president and CEO at United Way of the Midlands, told the Daily Nonpareil. “Their generosity will make it possible for us to respond to the most immediate needs in our community. Because of the effects of COVID-19, our neighbors need our support now more than ever.”
