The Libertarian and Republican candidates for Iowa’s Third Congressional District recently debated Democrat incumbent U.S. Rep. Cindy Axne, though the three had few differences when it came to the future of wind energy in the state.
Bryan Holder, the Libertarian candidate, expressed the greatest concern over turbines out of the three candidates, according to coverage by KMA. He discussed a friend who had his “dream acreage” in Adair County ruined by a neighbor who permitted a turbine to be placed near Holder’s friend’s home.
It basically ruined his acreage, just for the fact that they were placing this device so close to his house,” Holder said, according to KMA.
David Young, the Republican candidate and former member of Congress, said that local input into turbine placement is essential.
“I don't want somebody from New York or California voting on the number of places in Iowa – in Page County, Adair County or Madison County – as to where those turbines are placed,” Young said, according to KMA.
Axne said that local residents should be included in discussions about turbine placement.
“It's bringing the right people to the table, and that includes those who are impacted by it,” she said.
