Iowa state leaders memorialized Rep. John Landon (R-Ankeny) who passed away on Thursday, July 29 at the age of 71.

Landon was elected to office in 2013 to serve as representative for Iowa's 37th District, reported KCRG News.

“My indelible memory of late colleague John Landon crystallized for me on a February Friday a year ago,” Iowa State Rep. Jon Jacobsen of District 22 said in a July 29 Facebook post. “John served as Speaker for the Day. Not only did he wield the gavel—he led public prayer sincerely & devoutly, and entrusted to his delighted grandson the duties of leading the Pledge at the rostrum. Eternal rest grant unto John, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May he Rest In Peace. Amen. Requiescat in Pace.”

Landon served on a couple of committees including the House Local Government Committee and House Transportation Committee, reported KCCI News. He was also a Vietnam War veteran who also served as church deacon and on the stewardship committee at Cornerstone Baptist Church in Ankeny.

“When John spoke, people listened,” Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds said, according to KCCI News. “He was known as a trusted, genuine, caring person always willing to put others before himself. During his time in the Iowa Legislature, he brought his strong convictions and work ethic to the job every single day. I have always admired John as someone who will put in the work to get the job done. My deepest condolences go out to his wife, Marvis, his family, and a community that is grieving the loss of this incredible man.”

Landon is survived by his wife, two children and three grandchildren.
