The Iowa State Fair saw a large turnout, despite the rise in COVID-19 cases in the state.

The fair opened on Aug. 12 and received 78,000 visitors. The next day 104,000 arrived. on Aug. 13, KCRG reported.

Iowa is experiencing its third significant surge of the 18-month COVID-19 pandemic, The Courier reported.

“@HyVee to offer free, walk-in COVID-19 vaccine clinics at @IowaStateFair," Jay Byers, DSM Partnership CEO, said in a post to his Twitter account Aug. 9. He also linked to an article from the Des Moines Register and used the #DSMUSA hashtag.

As of Aug. 15, the rolling, two-week average of daily new cases was seven times than it had been roughly six weeks ago, The Courier reported, bringing it its highest since late February. A little more than 59% of citizens in Iowa had been vaccinated by the middle of the month, but public health experts generally say 70% is the public vaccination benchmark to curtail the spread of a virus like COVID-19.

Coronavirus hospitalization rates are also five times higher than they were six weeks ago and are the highest they have been the since early February.

During the past week new coronavirus cases have increased by 30% and hospitalizations have increased by 46%, according to The Courier.
