Gov. Kim Reynolds’ decision for Iowa to end enhanced unemployment benefits for tens of thousands of residents has resulted in proposed legal action.

The class action lawsuit asserts the cuts to be illegal, claiming they’re an affront to state law, KCRG reported. They ask that the court reinstate their eligibility.

“Great,” Debi Nagle, the wife of former Iowa Democratic lawmaker David Nagle, tweeted on Aug. 25. “Another lawsuit that will cost taxpayer money to defend a garbage decision made by @IAGovernor @KimReynoldsIA. She's truly made a mess of this state.”

The lawsuit, filed in Polk County, seeks to recoup potentially hundreds of millions of dollars in unemployment aid that would’ve been awarded to the complainants had Iowa not opted out of federal pandemic relief programs in late June, Yahoo Finance reported. The base of the lawsuit centers around a law that says that Iowa’s workforce agency is supposed to cooperate with the Department of Labor of the U.S. to the fullest extent.

Reynolds is only one of the 26 governors that have cut off this specific unemployment aid in their states before the established Sept. 6 date that the federal aid is supposed to expire.

Reynolds believes that Iowa’s “severe workforce shortage” needed to be addressed, Yahoo Finance reported.
