The Winnebago County Board of Supervisors on Sept. 28 approved a resolution that declared the county to be a “Second Amendment sanctuary,” essentially becoming the 18th such in Iowa.
Winnebago County joins a list that counts Jasper as the first to deem itself a haven for pro-gun individuals, KCRG reported.
The sixteen other Second Amendment sanctuary counties are Mitchell, Chickasaw, Pocahontas, Hardin, Carroll, Cedar, Washington, Madison, Mills, Adams, Clarke, Humboldt, Kossuth, Ringgold, Buchanan and Wayne, The Iowa Torch reported.
“We are truly amazed but not surprised to see many of Iowa’s local elected officials taking a stand against Constitutional infringements,” Michael Ware, chairman of Iowa Firearms Coalition, said in a statement obtained by the Iowa Torch. “It is our hope Governor Kim Reynolds will take notice of this clear trend sweeping across the Hawkeye state and in turn will issue a proclamation soon declaring all of Iowa a Second Amendment Sanctuary.”
Law enforcement in Second Amendment sanctuary counties are prohibited from enforcing laws that are an affront to the right to bear arms.
As of last June, the Iowa Torch reported, over 60% of U.S. counties were Second Amendment sanctuary counties while 18% of counties in Iowa are Second Amendment sanctuary countries as of Sept. 30.
