Fifty years ago, Iowa police came across a cold case murder, but the suspect wasn't identified then. However, now with the help of DNA technology, the suspect for the murder of 17-year-old Maureen Brubaker-Farley has been finally found, according to Law & Crime.

"50 years later, teen's cold-case slaying solved in Iowa," Twitter user @MisterMikeFrost tweeted Oct. 7.

The body of Brubaker-Farley was found Sept. 24, 1971, KCRG reported. DNA technology confirmed the suspect exactly 50 years later, on Sept. 24, 2021. An autopsy determined that Brubaker-Farley died from a skull fracture, and she had signs of sexual assault, according to Law & Crime.

The killer was identified as George M. Smith. However, the case will be closed, and no prosecution will take place since Smith died in 2013 at the age of 94.

Brubaker-Farley's mother was notified, and she revealed that she already knew Smith was the killer. She said that police "kind of knew" that he had done it back then, but they could not prove it.
