University of Iowa field hockey player Maddy Murphy has been named the Offensive Player of the Week by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association. The announcement came Wednesday and is Murphy's second national award of the season.
Trevor Maeder of KMA Sports tweeted, "Iowa field hockey player Maddy Murphy earned NFHCA National Offensive Player of the Week honors."
The award comes after Murphy led her top-ranked Hawkeyes to a pair of crucial and impressive road victories against No. 6 Rutgers and No. 7 Maryland. She racked up 5 points on the weekend and scored the team's second goal against Rutgers and the game winner against Maryland.
The two wins were the Hawkeyes' fourth and fifth consecutive wins of the young season, improving the Hawkeyes' record to 12-0, a perfect record so far this season. This is the program's best start since 1992. That year, the team won its first 20 games and finished as an NCAA runner-up.
Murphy's first national award came back on Sept. 1. The Iowa team has earned three national awards this year. Fellow Hawkeye Anthe Nijziel earned NFHCA National Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 29.
