COVID-19 deaths continue to rise in Iowa, despite an overall decline in cases in the past weeks.
While the positivity rates for COVID have been falling throughout the state over the past weeks, hospitalizations are up along with the number of deaths reported each day, according to KCCI 8, who cited numbers from The Iowa Department of Public Health.
“Hey, Iowa: 8100 new cases and 97 deaths reported (yes, COVID) just this week. Please send congratulations to Reynolds, Grassley, Ernst, Meeks, and any other trumper politician who subscribe to the 'don’t tread on me' BS…” said Twitter user Uncle Jerry in a tweet on Wednesday, expressing frustration.
As of Wednesday, Oct 13, cases were on the decline in Iowa thanks to 3,551,153 doses of COVID vaccines that had been administered statewide, according to KCCI 8. The concern now lies with new hospitalizations and deaths as patient space in hospitals decreases.
Numbers collected on Wednesday showed the 7-day average of COVID deaths at 13, the highest number since early in April, according to The Gazette. Of the 97 deaths reported over the last week, 69 have been over the age of 60.
With the number of new COVID-19 cases in Iowa on the decline for the third week in a row, this could be an indication that the recent surge caused by the Delta variant may finally be declining, according to The Gazette.
