The Iowa Women’s Wrestling team has appointed Clarissa Chun, two-time olympian, their first ever head coach.
Chun finished fifth in Beijing in 2008 and brought home the bronze in the 2012 London Olympics. She is the first coach of Iowa’s recently sanctioned NCAA Division I, Power Five institution.
The Iowa women’s wrestling team tweeted: “It’s a historic day! Allow us to introduce you to our Head Coach Clarissa Chun!”
Fans of the up-and-coming team are excited to welcome Clarissa as well.
Cathy Zaharis, self-appointed “Lifelong Hawkeye,” replied, “Congrats, Clarissa! Welcome to the Hawkeye family.”
Randy Boswell, another fan, replied, “@ClarissaChun That is the best news I’ve heard today. Congratulations!!!"
Chun’s achievements are numerous. In 2012, she became the first woman wrestler to be nominated to two olympic teams after tryouts. She wrestled for team USA at the Olympics that year and for Japan at the Fila Women’s World Cup just a few months later.
Chun also competed in five world championships, and she is a four-time U.S. Open champion. Chun is the first female wrestler from Hawaii to win a medal at the Olympics. She is planned to be inducted into the hall of fame in 2022, ESPN reported.
