COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations in Iowa have reached an all-time high, setting new records in 2021.
"Reynolds also said that Iowa ended COVID. However, IA has a positivity rate over 12% & more than 84% of those hospitalized are unvaccinated. Perhaps try taking responsibility for failed public health initiatives instead of taking credit for Dems' work to help all Americans," tweeted Patti Vasquez on Dec. 11.
Deaths due to COVID-19 are approaching 7,700 in Iowa, Radio Iowa reported.
As of the middle of December, Iowa reported a new 2021 record for people hospitalized due to COVID-19.
"We've been in crisis mode since this started," pediatric critical care specialist Tracy L. Ekhardt said in an interview, the Des Moines Register reported. "Especially since this last wave of delta hit, starting in about August, our whole city has been in this crisis mode. We've kind of pulled out all of the stops, and we're working at capacity. All of us are already limiting outpatient procedures and surgeries, so there's not a lot of flex in the system left."
Some 54.4% of citizens of Iowa are fully vaccinated as of Dec. 8, Radio Iowa reported. The statewide 14-day positivity rate as reported on Dec. 15 is 11.3%. Hospitals in Iowa have reported treating a total of 823 COVID-19 patients, out of which 173 are in intensive care and 103 are on ventilators, the Des Moines Register reported.
