Iowa head football coach Kirk Ferentz signed a contract extension until 2030 and then allegedly discarded the football diversity committee following that extension. The committee had been formed in response to strife within the program.
Ferentz is the longest-tenured active head football coach in the country.
“I am grateful to President Barb Wilson and Athletics Director Gary Barta for their continued support of our program" Ferentz said, Hawkeye Sports reported. "I am proud of the success that we have achieved in Iowa City the past 23 years and look forward to many more years of competing at the highest level."
The coach's $7 million contract will expire Jan. 31, 2030. Ferentz is a four time Big Ten coach of the year in football. Ferentz allegedly discontinued the diversity committee that was established after accusations of racism and bullying within the Iowa football program in 2020, The Gazette reported.
The dispansion of the diversity committee makes Ferentz's long contract extension controversial in some circles. Ferentz has been Iowa's head football coach for 23 seasons, according to Hawkeye Sports. Ferentz is Iowa's all-time winningest coach.
