The Iowa Hawkeyes men’s basketball squad has won seven of its last nine games, earning eight votes but not quite breaking into the Associated Press top 25 this week.
The Hawkeyes used a strong second half to put away Penn State, 68-51, Saturday in the Black and Gold Spirit Game. Iowa took a 5-point lead into the locker room, then outscored the Nittany Lions by 12 in the second.
“These guys did what they needed to do to win,” Micah Shrewsberry, Penn State head coach, said about Iowa after the game.
Iowa has defended its home court well recently, winning five in a row at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. The Iowa hardwood has not been good for Penn State for the past two decades, as the Nittany Lions (8-8 overall, 3-5 Big Ten) have won only once there since 2002.
The Hawkeyes (14-5, 4-4) spread the ball on offense, with four players ending in double figures.
Keegan Murray was the top scorer, with 15. He was followed by Kris Murray’s 13, Jordan Bohannon’s 11 and Patrick McCaffery’s 11.
The Hawkeyes have a challenge Thursday, Jan. 27, when they host the sixth-ranked Purdue Boilermakers (16-3, 5-3).
