Thanks to a generous donation from PowerTech, a new playground is coming to Cochran Park (100 South 21st St) in Council Bluffs. In addition to the new playground, Cochran Park has a new baseball field, a new mini-pitch, and is situated across the street from First Ave, the City’s new multi-modal trail.
Council Bluffs Parks and Recreation will demo and remove the current play structure on Monday, August 29, 2022, and the contractor will begin installing the new amenities on September 6, 2022. Temporary fencing will encompass the work area during construction. The playground is expected to open this fall, and the City will host a celebratory ribbon cutting.
The new play area features one structure for ages 2-5, one for ages 5-12, and a swing set. The play elements offer climbing areas, treehouse-like platforms, shade structures, and tube slides, all with a new rubberized safety surface.
Playgrounds are an essential community amenity that allows children to develop social, emotional, cognitive, and physical skills. The colorful configuration of play equipment naturally attracts kids to the outdoors, builds their strength and agility, and encourages healthy lifestyles.
“With its proximity to the new First Ave trail, and the recent renovations, Cochran Park will be a hub for family activities,” said Council Bluffs Mayor Matt Walsh. “We are grateful to PowerTech for the generous community donation that made the new playgrounds possible.”
Cochran Park is approximately three acres in size. In 2021, the Council Bluffs Parks and Recreation added a new baseball field to replace the Big Lake baseball field that was permanently closed due to flood damages. In July 2022, the mini-pitch, a futsal-sized pitch for three-on-three soccer, was moved from Roberts Park to Cochran Park. Additionally, Cochran Park is home to an “Art in the Park” sign created by Jeffery L Day in 2015.
The Parks and Recreation Department is also formulating plans to replace the Cochran Park basketball hoops and convert the tennis courts to pickleball courts in 2023.
