(Spencer, Iowa) The Iowa Lakes Community College Continuing Education Department is offering two Third Age College, also known as Stay Active in Learning (SAIL), classes mainly for individuals 65 and older this January. The classes, World War I: The “Great War,” starting January 17, 2023, and Rodgers & Hammerstein Movie Musicals 1943-1965, beginning January 19, will be in-person on the Spencer Campus, with virtual learning options available.

World War I: “The Great War”

The World War I: The “Great War” lecture series will tell the riveting, tragic, and cautionary tale of this watershed historical event and its aftermath in 36 half-hour lectures by Professor Vejas Gabriel Liulevicius of the University of Tennessee.

Professor Liulevicius has a gift for cutting through the tangle of historical data to uncover the patterns that make sense of complex events. And few events are as complex as World War I, which pitted the Central Powers of Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Ottoman Turkey, later joined by Bulgaria, against the Allies, principally France, Great Britain, Russia, Italy, Japan, and, after 1917, the United States.

The World War I: The “Great War” lecture series will be held weekly on Tuesdays starting January 17 and ending May 9 from 9:00 to 11:30 am on the Spencer Campus at 1900 Grand Avenue.

Rodgers & Hammerstein Movie Musicals 1943-1965

The Rodgers & Hammerstein Movie Musicals class will help chase away the winter blues by learning about and viewing the great musicals created by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein, including Oklahoma!, Carousel, State Fair, South Pacific, The King and I, Cinderella, Flower Drum Song, and The Sound of Music. Of course, some people may break into spontaneous singing, and that’s not only okay but welcomed.

The Rodgers & Hammerstein movie series will be held weekly on Thursdays starting January 19 and ending May 11 from 9:00 to 11:30 am on the Spencer Campus.

Each lecture series will cost $25 a piece. To register for one or both classes, visit iowalakes.edu/ce and search for class number 6737 for the World War I class or 6738 for the Rodgers & Hammerstein class. For assistance, please call 800-252-5664.
