Food assistance cost in Montgomery County: Down 6.4% since 2014

Montgomery County saw a 6.4% decrease in the amount of money received from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) since 2014, according to Iowa's Department of Human Services.

In 2023, the county received a total of $2,246,141 worth of benefits provided by SNAP, compared to $2,399,530 in 2014.

Qualified recipients in the program are eligible to receive financial assistance in the form of Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) cards, which then can be used to buy selected groceries. The amount of benefits depends on the net income and household size.

Statewide, Polk County recorded the highest total of food assistance benefits, amounting to $101,313,004 in 2023.

Overall, Montgomery County registered 1,205 people across 590 households receiving food stamps in 2023. In 2014, there were 1,943 residents assisted by the program living in 884 households.

Since 2014, $23,856,200 has been allocated to Montgomery County as part of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.
