As COVID-19 cases spike in the county and students miss class to illness in increasing numbers, Hamburg Community School District leadership has requested a waiver to begin virtual learning for two weeks.
Fremont County is above 17% in its 14-day infection rate, above the number necessary to request a virtual waiver. Iowa Public Radio reported Superintendent Mike Wells wrote in a letter to district parents that 23% of the elementary students and 39% of middle school students were at home from school sick. There are four staff members confirmed with coronavirus and six quarantining because of exposure. There is also one confirmed student although Wells suspects there are more.
“We’re a small school and we have people in quarantine, and we have people that are positive COVID,” Wells said, Iowa Public Radio reported. “We simply can’t run. We don’t have subs, we can’t find subs. And we just simply can’t offer an education live.”
Classes will be held on ZOOM with breakfast and lunch delivered to students' houses during the duration of virtual learning.
